West Frisian folklore
Schagen is known for its West Frisian folklore. During the summer months, on ten consecutive Thursdays, a procession of historic vehicles and Schagen residents dressed in authentic West Frisian traditional attire winds its way through the town center—either on foot or seated on or in farm wagons. Each West Frisian Thursday has a specific theme and daily program, ranging from dance, music, and traditional attire to ringsteken.
Since 1953, the Foundation for the Promotion of West Frisian Folklore has organized the 10 West Frisian Thursdays. These Thursdays focus on, among other things, life, work, and clothing as they were in 1910. The market starts as early as 8:30 a.m. and often lasts until around 4:00 p.m. in the summer. The market is a household name in the region and always a lively affair. The best market stalls, featuring typical West Frisian products and more, are spaced out along one side of the street. You’ll find the market on Gedempte Gracht and Nieuwstraat.
